Site: Gowanus Canal and 1st Street, Brooklyn, NY
Program: Artist Studio + Complex
The area around the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has a long sordid history of pollution and a more recent history of skyrocketing speculation. Situated adjacent to the polluted canal, the site is surrounded by several unique heritages. The canal has history of the rise and fall and the heritages now lost their liveliness. This project intends to create new monumentality as one bold object, so the area may have a new dynamic for the future. The building provides cultural and entertaining space for neighborhood as well as many large and small community spaces for its residents- artists.
